Tuning Basics
The manufactures must use a “Canned” tune and Engine calibration.
One that is safe to run in Texas/Ontario and even Alaska.
In order to do this, they need to make the Fuel Map Safe for all areas, which, generally means TOO RICH too much fuel.
So when we tune, the vehicle is driven in the manner that the owner/driver usually drives.
The fuel map data is logged via the Oxygen sensor (or added wideband sensor, see not further down)
We than use this logged data to remove the extra fuel being added.
This not only makes the vehicle more Fuel Efficient!!! saving you $$$$ at the pump, but unlocks some extra Performance and Horsepower.
Another issue relating to many vehicles is heat.
Many have heard/read or experienced the dreaded INTAKE leaks on certain GM cars.
Not only is this due to improper concentration of the Dexcool or regular coolant, heat plays a HUGE factor in these failures.
With tuning, we can lower the operation Temp of the vehicle and have the Fans turn on 10 or more degrees quicker.
One of the most FAQ is;
Do I need to install a WIDEBAND HO2S for tuning?
The answer is NO. The WBO2s is not mandatory for tuning, however, they are extremely beneficial when tuning WOT (wide Open Throttle) as the regular HO2S’ are not accurate at these levels.
